PP vs PET Food Packaging: Key Differences, Applications, and How to Choose the Right Tray

The decision usually comes down to two letters: PP or PET. A meat processor needs a tray that keeps drip aside and still looks clean under store lighting. A frozen meal brand needs a container that goes from freezer to microwave or convection oven without warping. Both are asking the same question in different words, and getting the material wrong can mean leaky packages, melted trays, or a shortened shelf life.

What PP and PET Trays Are

Polypropylene (PP) is a lightweight thermoplastic with a slightly hazy, translucent look. It flexes rather than cracks, bounces back from rough handling, and holds up to repeated folding or hinging, which is why PP is common in hinged deli containers and cup lids. It copes with temperatures up to around 130°C for short periods, making it a default choice for microwave reheating.

PET is denser, stiffer, and far clearer. In its standard amorphous form it softens at around 70°C, which limits it to cold and ambient fill applications. When crystallized into CPET, however, the same resin becomes ovenable up to about 220°C. That flexibility makes the PET family broader than its modest continuous-service rating suggests.

Both resins can be thermoformed into trays, cups, lids, and containers. The differences show up in how each behaves on a filling line, in a distribution truck, and on a consumer's dinner table.

Temperature Performance: Where the Two Materials Part Ways

Heat is the fastest way to separate PP from PET. PP has a melting point near 160°C, which is why it appears in microwaveable meal trays, hot-fill cups, and packaging that touches freshly cooked food. It will soften and distort under direct oven heat, so it stays out of conventional ovens.

Amorphous PET cannot handle microwave or oven duty. It warps and becomes sticky when exposed to high heat. But CPET, made by aligning the polymer chains through crystallization, is a different product altogether. CPET trays are designed for dual-ovenable use, surviving both microwaves and conventional ovens at 180-220°C, which is why they are the standard for ready meals that need a crispy finish under an oven grill.

If your line runs a frozen lasagna or a bake-at-home pie, start with CPET trays for oven-safe and dual-ovenable packaging. If you only need microwave reheating, PP will do the job at a lower piece price.

Clarity and Consumer Appeal

PET is the clear winner in optics. Its light transmission approaches that of glass, giving shoppers an unobstructed view of the product. That matters for marinated meats, premium desserts, fresh berries, and any item where color and texture drive the purchase.

PP is naturally hazy. It can be clarified with nucleating agents, but even then it does not match PET's transparency. For products that rely on the label rather than the food to sell, hazy PP is rarely a problem. For products displayed in a refrigerated case, clear PET trays create a stronger impression and often support a higher price point.

Barrier Properties and Shelf Life

Oxygen destroys fresh meat color, speeds up lipid oxidation, and shortens shelf life. PET has a meaningful advantage here, with oxygen transmission roughly ten times lower than PP at the same thickness. This is why PET is common in modified atmosphere packaging for beef, chicken, and pork.

PP fights back on the moisture side. Its water vapor transmission rate is lower, so it helps keep dry products dry and prevents condensation on the inside of a sealed container when temperatures fluctuate.

When you need both oxygen and moisture protection in one tray, the answer is typically a multi-layer structure with an EVOH interlayer. EVOH can be co-extruded into either PP or PET trays, and it is what pushes shelf life from days to weeks. EVOH barrier trays and cups are a practical option when a product targets longer distribution cycles or export chains.

Moisture Control in Meat and Produce Packaging

Liquid pooling is one of the fastest ways to lose a retail account. Meat weeps, poultry sweats, and even washed produce releases water. A tray that cannot manage that liquid leaves the package looking tired and gives bacteria a friendlier environment.

PET trays are widely used for fresh meat because the clear material shows the cut while an absorbent pad sits underneath. The rigidity of PET keeps the tray from bowing under a heavy roast or a stack of chicken breasts. Moisture-retention trays add a patterned well or absorbent layer that holds drip away from the product. PP handles moisture differently. It is a better water vapor barrier in general, but a PP tray with a pad can still work well. The deciding factor is usually rigidity. PP flexes when loaded with dense cuts; PET holds its shape. For a heavy wet product, PET is usually the safer call.

Cost, Weight, and Sustainability

Weight drives cost per thousand pieces. PP has a density of about 0.90 g/cm³, while PET sits near 1.38 g/cm³. For the same tray volume, a PP part uses roughly 30-35% less resin by weight. That gap narrows because PP trays often need a thicker wall to achieve the stiffness PET gets at a thinner gauge, but PP usually retains a piece-price advantage.

Sustainability comparisons are more nuanced. PET has a well-established recycling stream in many countries, and bottle-grade PET is widely collected. PP is recyclable but has a less consistent collection infrastructure. Life-cycle assessments of trays show the outcome depends heavily on end-of-life collection rates, whether recycled content is used, and how the tray is recycled. In general, a lighter tray that is actually collected and recycled beats a heavier tray that is not.

How to Choose Between PP and PET

Work through these five questions and the material usually picks itself.

  1. What is the worst temperature the package will meet? If it goes into an oven, choose CPET. If it only faces microwave reheating, PP is enough.
  2. Does the food need to be visible? Transparent PET shows the product; PP hides it behind a haze.
  3. What shelf life do you need? Longer shelf life points to PET or a multi-layer tray with an EVOH barrier.
  4. What is inside? Wet, heavy, or dense food favors rigid PET. Dry, oily, or flexible portions work well in PP.
  5. How will the package be perceived? Premium presentation favors PET; value-priced and microwave-friendly formats favor PP.

Testing is the final step. Thermoform a short run of both materials, run them through your filling line, and put them in the same cold chain and cooking conditions your customers will use. The data from that trial is worth more than any material datasheet.

A Final Word on Material Selection

The rule of thumb is simple. Use PET when clarity, stiffness, and visual appeal matter most. Use PP when heat resistance, light weight, and cost drive the decision. Use CPET or an EVOH multi-layer tray when you need oven capability or long shelf life. A choice made from actual line conditions, rather than habit, is the one that survives contact with a wet steak and a crowded fridge.
